Arctic hearing

The appeal hearing for Jones v Garnett has been brought forward and will now be heard at the Court of Appeal in London on 29 and 30 November 2005.
Professional Contractors Group chairman, Simon Juden, welcomed the news and said that he hoped that this would mean 'the chance of a judgment in time to bring certainty for taxpayers before the 31 January income tax self-assessment deadline'.

Tax lecturer of the year

The 2006 Taxation Awards will include a new award for tax lecturer of the year. This will be voted for by readers on the Taxation website, from a shortlist compiled in advance by the chairman of the judging panel, Francesca Lagerberg, and the editor of Taxation, Mike Truman. Inclusion on the shortlist will be entirely at their discretion; however, suggestions from readers are welcome.
If readers would like to suggest lecturers for consideration as candidates for the shortlist, please email their names and the reason why you are suggesting them to taxation@lexisnexis.co.uk by 31 October at the latest. Lecturers need to be active in CPD rather than only in exam training in order to be considered.
