HMRC announces GIA funding results
Voluntary and community sector organisations will receive £6 million for the next three years from HMRC.
Fifty-seven bodies have received Grant in Aid (GIA) funding awards for 2008-2009, 21 of which received a boost for multi-year funded projects.
In the same period, the Revenue extended its funding programme to include third-sector organisations, social enterprises, cooperatives, and both large and small mutuals, in addition to voluntary and community organisations and charities.
The funding is intended to help vulnerable and hard-to-reach members of the public – including the elderly and those on low-incomes – ensure they receive the correct benefits and pay the right amount of tax.
It also aims to improve the user experience for such people, and help HMRC gain a better understanding of taxpayers who use the third sector.
Head of HMRC’s Third Sector Team, Derek Tilstone, said: ‘These organisations provide a safety net for people who do not normally come to HMRC for help and advice.
‘Their work is vital because it makes customers aware of our products, provides extra help with tax issues and brings [people] back into direct contact with HMRC.’
The department will be announcing the launch of its next funding round in October.
