But service is for urgent cases only

HMRC have launched a system to make it easier for the self-employed to submit their self assessment returns via the web.

A new fast-track service is available to the end of January 2009 to speed up the process that demands each SA online taxpayer hold a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR).

It is intended for use, however, only when an UTR is urgently required.

This is expected to be most commonly when members of partnerships have not notified the taxman of their liability, and the partnership needs to meet the filing deadline for the partnership return.

The fast track can be accessed by calling the helpline number 0845 915 4515, which is available from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 4pm during weekends.

The Revenue has pledged to provide each UTR by post within five working days, and taxpayers are asked not to use the fast-track service unless the need for a number is critical.
