Taxman sees 12% rise on previous year

The record for the number of self assessment tax returns filed online has been broken once again, HMRC announced today.

Of the 9.5 million taxpayers who received SA forms for 2008/09, 6,429,899 filed online by the 31 January deadline: three-quarters of all returns submitted.

This represented an increase of almost 12% on last year's figure of 5,759,006, which was itself was a vast increase on the number of people who filed in 2008.

On the busiest day for online returns, 29 January, HMRC received 384,638 online SA returns. The peak filing hour occurred between 4pm and 5pm on the same day, when 39,512 digital returns were received by the Revenue.

Ah!

It turns out that 'the 5,759,006 figure is the total of people who filed online by the 31 January deadline and the 5,949,510 is the total number of online returns filed for the whole tax year'.

HMRC claim...

...the '5,949k figure is last year’s total (i.e. tax returns for the year 2007/08 filed in 2008/09)' - although the figure doesn't tally with the one the department reported a year ago.

We're looking into this.
