Online tax return amendments

We have received a couple of reports from readers who had problems when filing online amendments to 2007/08 tax returns on 31st January 2010.

Both were able to submit an amendment on 30th January 2010 successfully, but could not do this on 31 January.

One reader reports a message on the HMRC website on 31 January as follows:

‘You have indicated an amended submission but the amendment window has now closed for the year of assessment to which your submission relates.’

According to HMRC’s notes on ‘Correcting your tax return and claiming any refund’ and TMA 1970, s 9ZA(2), the deadline for an amendment to a 2007/08 tax return is up to and including 31 January 2010.

If any other Taxation readers have had this problem, we would be interested in receiving their experiences and comments below.
