Same old sex-change story

‘Tax officials have published financial advice for homosexual, bisexual and transgender people,’ tuts The Daily Telegraph on p10 of its inky version today.

Accountancy Age’s website has a similar item dated 25 August 2010.

Both titles consider themselves to be credible disseminators of news – so one wonders why they would choose to report the existence of an HMRC booklet that was launched 14 months ago.

It’s especially odd given that they both ran the story online at the time it was actual news: the Telegraph on 18 June 2009 (only a couple of days after Taxation blogged about the Revenue’s advice) and Accountancy Age on the following day.

It's surely nought but a coincidence that the Daily Mail's Richard Littlejohn yesterday mentioned the booklet as if it were new, as he commented – in a typically thoughtful, balanced and well-researched column – on the case of Christine Timbrell, who successfully won the right to a woman's pension following gender reassignment surgery.

Her victory, incidentally, was a little over two months ago.
