The reports of sleaze and MPs expenses continues apace, with papers from The Sun to The Daily Telegraph reporting that the claims of Mr and Mrs Balls (Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper) are under investigation. Our happy couple spend the working week in London - their children go to school there - and weekends and holidays at their home in Yorkshire, where they have their constituencies. Now you might think that the Yorkshire house would be their second home on which they could claim expenses. Apparently not; that's their main home, and the London property is their second home for which the full running costs can be claimed. I think more and more people are going to be completing the expenses sections of their tax returns on the basis of the rules for MPs than on the rules in ITEPA 2003. When is HMRC going to get to grip with these claims?
