Yesterday's Daily Telegraph suggested that 'with prudent planning, you can still cut next year's tax bill'.

The paper then offered ten (overly) simple, more-or-less sensible pieces of advice, such as 'invest in ISAs' and 'check your tax code'.

Back in the day (when he was still hilarious), Steve Martin provided a more succinct guide to limiting one's tax bill:

  1. Wilfully pay no levies whatsoever.
  2. When the taxman knocks on your door, you need only use two little words to rid yourself of culpability: I forgot.
