My thanks to Anthony Meehan of Winter Rule for pointing this one out.
Press Notice 2 from the pre-budget report gives two rates of married couple's allowance (MCA), depending on whether either of the spouses is or is not over 75 at some point during the tax year 2009/10.
However, to qualify for the MCA at all, one of the spouses needs to have been born before 6 April 1935. As our American cousins would say, 'you do the math'.
Interestingly, HMRC's pre-budget report note 1 is correct, only giving one rate of allowance, and not even giving an explanation because (of course...) all advisers will understand why.
The lads and lasses at 100 PS don't, however, seem to have told their Treasury colleagues at the Horseguards end of the building.
Had they not noticed? Or are they secretly giggling at the Treasury's inability to add 75 to 1935?

Return to the forever youthful Taxation.co.uk.
