As those of us who did believe ‘what a wonderful world this could be’ despair at the ineffectiveness of the UN, The Timesreports that a convoy of UK and US diplomats in Zimbabwe was attacked by militiamen and police yesterday. Ambassadors have been summoned to explain and relationships between the countries plumb new depths. Meanwhile, the paper notes Foreign Secretary David Milliband as saying that the incident ‘served as a window into the lives of Zimbabweans for whom this kind of intimidation happens daily’. For fairly obvious reasons I will not mention the name of the author of a letter from Zimbabwe that I saw a few days ago; one line reads:‘We are living like birds now’. According to The Times, 2.9 billion Zimbabwean dollars were needed to buy £1 yesterday. No doubt it will cost more today. Details of other currency exchange rates can be found at Taxation.co.uk.
