Wow! Some people are keen on tax. I mean, very, very keen. In fact, they're tantalised by the subject; enchanted, even. This week, I was on an ATT course, studying capital gains tax. I arrived at class each morning at 8.30 in preparation for a 9am start - and I was surprised not only to find that several fellow students were already there, but also that they were working heatedly on CGT exercises. I felt almost guilty when I coolly whipped out The Guardian quick crossword and a bacon roll. And I was vaguely sheepish at break times and during the lunch hour, when instead of joining others in conversation about 1982 share pooling and such like, I sat reading a good book (Alice Munro's The View from Castle Rock, since you ask). I just couldn't keep up with that intense level of chat, you see. The truth is, I'm a journalist, a wordsmith, a writer; dare I say, an artist? (Yes, I dare!) I'm a left-half-of-the-brain sort. All power to you right-siders.
