My working life might have been very different. About two-and-a-half years ago, I verbally accepted a job in the United Arab Emirates as a 'consume' writer (which was the magazine company's term for hacks concerned with the frivilous spending of cash). Expect me to call tomorrow with the pay details and what have you, said the publisher who'd made me the offer. I'm still waiting to hear from him. That makes me feel rather like the people of the UAE, who have been expecting the introduction of VAT for about the same length of time as I've been waiting to make the move east. Except, of course, the UAE is reportedly close to the launch of a sales tax, whereas I'm never going to swap south London for Dubai.
