It's unlikely that readers need reminding that HMRC inspectors will soon be imbued with potent new powers. While these extraordinary privileges might have raised concerns among a number of tax experts, they far from allow the sort of liberties the USA's government proposes to take. Homeland Security is currently testing a device called MALINTENT, which searches a person's body for non-visible clues - raised heart rate, increased respiration and what not - that suggest intent to do harm to others. It's hoped that MALINTENT will be installed at airports throughout the States, to detect terrorists and other peripatetic villains. One suspects that HMRC will be looking at them with jealousy: such Orwellian contraptions would fit nicely in the entrances of Revenue offices, to capture would-be tax evaders and dedicated fibbers. I'm reminded of what one sagacious sort or other uttered as far back as 1983: '1984 is just around the corner'.
