Good news for music lovers in today's Independent: Adele's mega-selling album 21 won't ever be streamed online.

On learning this morning that Spotify et al will remain blessedly free of soul tunes so cheap and plastic it's amazing they haven't been recalled for posing a choking hazard to children, I was reminded of a conversation I had not so long ago with a colleague.

We were discussing Adele, for what reason I don’t recall – but I do remember that my workmate was sticking up for the singer-songwriter (albeit with little vigour).

I mentioned that not only did she offend my ears with her bellowed twaddle, she angered me by vehemently objecting to paying tax, in spite of having an estimated net worth of £6 million and being a user of the NHS and a product of the state-funded BRIT School of Performing Arts.

My colleague’s response was the correct one: ‘Forget her, then!’

Except, of course, he didn’t say ‘forget’.
