A starstruck tax employee in the States has spied himself into trouble. John Snyder of Kentucky accessed the confidential files of almost 200 celebrities over about five years while working for the Internal Revenue Service. Then he got caught and he's now awaiting sentencing, having pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour offence. The 57-year-old faces up to a year in prison and a $250,000 fine. The famous sorts upon whom he snooped? Well, Alec Baldwin is currently the most heavyweight star, followed by fellow Hollywood player Kevin Bacon. There was also Sally Field, Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid. Remember them? And, um, Tara Reid (she was in the first American Pie flick) and, er, Cincinnati Bengals boss Marvin Lewis (no, me neither). What would happen if an HMRC employee committed a similar crime by accessing the accounts of various silver-screen character actors, stars of yesteryear, talent-free bimbos and people who coach rugby for wimps? In a wide-ranging chat with press officer Patrick O'Brien - which covered subjects as diverse as comedian Will Ferrell, CB radio, a school teacher's car and Smokey and the Bandit - I learned that one unauthorised dip into a single file will lead to instant dismissal and possible legal prosecution. One file! That's all it takes. So, if you MUST swap your job at the Revenue for unemployment and maybe a spell in jail, at least pry into the tax goings-on of an A-lister.
