A story about an 'iPod tax' in Canada got me thinking about the music of taxation - and, more specifically, famous songs relating to the profession.
There aren't any.
Except for The Beatles' classic Taxman, of course.
Now, if this were a tabloid newspaper, I'd go down the tired, easy route of portraying the Revenue as a cash-grabbing monster.
That'd allow me to suggest a multitude of tracks, such as...

  • Money (That's What I Want) - Barrett Strong/The Beatles/The Flying Lizards/et al
  • It's Yer Money I'm After, Baby - The Wonder Stuff
  • Money - Pink Floyd
  • etc.

However, this is Taxation, and we have more class - as well as respect for the good people of HMRC.
So, I hunted around the internet, and my efforts gleaned many tunes that, while hardly well-known, are most certainly about the tax sector.
(Alas, a disheartening number of efforts seem to be by well-paid musicians complaining about having their huge wedges garnished.)
They include:

  • Taxman, Mr Thief - Cheap Trick
  • Taxes are Best When You Pay Nothing at All - Stephen Stubbs
  • It's My Money - The Right Brothers (a rant about... you guessed it)
  • Tax on Tax - Billy Davis
  • Sales Tax - The Mississippi Sheiks
  • Tax Return - New Mexican Disaster Squad
  • Thermo Nuclear Tax - DJ Food

And then they get increasingly obscure.
If you know any appropriate songs with a higher recognition factor, we'd love to hear from you.
Please pop your suggestions in the Comments section at the foot of this entry.
