Mark Lee's article A far far better thing... has struck a chord with me.

I am a 52-year-old chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser who trained with Peat Marwick Mitchell in London where I did the exams with both institutes; subsequently I worked in general practice for two years with one local firm transferring to become tax manager for six years in another local firm before becoming an independent sole practitioner providing taxation services (both compliance and consultancy as required) in 1992.

When I started to work for myself I felt I had a good grounding in taxation in all the main fields relevant to the sort of tax areas I was ever likely to work in with mostly individuals as clients. I felt that as time went by my knowledge increased and I was becoming more and more...
