HMRC prepare for change to online filing

HMRC have launched a direct mail campaign to warn almost two million businesses of major imminent changes to VAT administration.

The Revenue has sent out 1.9 million leaflets by post detailing how from 1 April 2010 firms with an annual turnover of £100 000 or more (excluding VAT) will have to file their VAT returns online and pay the tax electronically.

Under the changes businesses registering for VAT on or after 1 April will have to file their return online and pay electronically whatever their turnover.

Businesses that are new to the taxman’s web services are being advised to register now for VAT Online while experienced users of HMRC’s digital offering are recommended that they add VAT Online to their portfolio.

HMRC will send formal letters in February to all existing businesses affected by the new online filing...
