Data accepted through electronic data interchange until 2014

HMRC have published the software developers' technical pack for real-time information (RTI) reporting using the internet through the Government Gateway.

The Revenue has also announced that, in response to concerns from the software and banking industries about the timescales for developing the ISO standards for use in the BACS channel, the department will accept RTI data through electronic data interchange (EDI) until at least 2014, in addition to the internet channel.

The head of Payroll Alliance, Linda Pullan, welcomed the announcement on EDI, saying it demonstrated that the Revenue is listening to the payroll sector's concerns.

‘EDI is used by a number of large employers and leading payroll bureaux, and our members have voiced their concerns that the channel would not be used for RTI,’ commented Ms Pullan.

A HMRC spokesperson said, ‘The timetable for migrating employers to RTI has not changed. We remain on track to support the Department for Work and Pensions’ universal credit from October 2013.

‘HMRC plan to pilot RTI through internet and EDI channels from April 2012. The revised timetable for the BACS channel will be announced later,’ she added.
