Aidan Langley’s book features aspects of planning reward structures. It goes into areas ranging well beyond tax benefiting from the writer’s qualifications as a solicitor and an accountant.

This fifth edition reflects the law as at October 2013 with evidence of recent updating. A CD-ROM is included.

The text reads as a series of cross-linked detailed lecture notes going straight into each topic but giving limited context and not suggesting how the parts fit into an overall strategy.

As such it may appeal more to experienced practitioners rather than to general readers or human resources professionals.

The slant is towards large firms rather than owner-managed businesses which have markedly different priorities. The comments are concise and perceptive with many clearly designed and comprehensive charts and a good glossary of terms.

The index would benefit from highlighting the key pages covering a topic but...
