Penalties

HMRC are consulting on making changes to their penalties regime, which could differentiate between taxpayers who deliberately fail to meet deadlines and those who make occasional errors. Responses should be emailed no later than 11 May

Record submissions

A record 8.76m self assessment returns (85.5%) were filed online this tax year, compared with 8.48m in the previous 12 months, according to Revenue figures.

Online summaries

More than eight million taxpayers who filed their 2013/14 tax return electronically by 31 January are now able to access their tax summary via HMRC online services.

Business accounts

More than two million businesses have signed up to HMRC’s online tax account service, which was launched in May 2014.

The CIOT has announced that candidates from 56 countries and territories sat the advanced diploma in international taxation (ADIT) exams in 2014.

ERS bulletin

HMRC have published Employment-Related Securities Bulletin 19.

Tonnage tax

Revenue and Customs Brief 1 (2015) states that 2015 will not be an “excepted year” for the purpose of the tonnage tax flagging rules.
