Communicating MTD

I participated in the HMRC webinar on Making Tax Digital. We were told quite glibly that we had to educate our clients and we had to start now. Yes elderly people use smartphones they skype they use tablets. They do it well. HMRC seems to think therefore MTD will be a doddle for the small businessperson or the 70 plus year old who has property or investment income. They currently need to use tax advisers to enable them to comply fully with the demands of HMRC. That will not change and it won’t change because tax for the self-employed is complicated. We practitioners can tell clients in detail what they can and cannot claim for. We practitioners know the rules. Clients do not. Nor should they be expected to. Despite my ‘educating’ clients I continually am asked ‘why can’t I claim for xxxx’....
