HMRC Powers – Going too Far? was the title of a Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) tax debate held at the great hall in the Royal Society of Arts in London on 9 July.
Defending the extension of HMRC powers were Jim Harra director general for business at HMRC and barrister Jolyon Maugham of Devereux Chambers.
Speaking against the extension were Philip Baker QC of Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers and James Bullock head of the litigation and compliance group at Pinsent Masons. Anne Fairpo CIOT president chaired the debate.
