VAT deferral: remember to cancel direct debit

Businesses that pay their VAT by direct debit should cancel them as soon as possible in light of the chancellor’s announcement that, during the coronavirus crisis, VAT payments are being deferred automatically until 30 June. HMRC is not responsible for stopping the direct debit instruction, so businesses themselves should contact their bank to do this.

HMRC’s guidance states: ‘Customers who normally pay by direct debit should cancel their direct debit with their bank if they are unable to pay. Please do so in sufficient time so that HMRC do not attempt to automatically collect on receipt of your VAT return.’
