Fire at the Stamp Office

17 September 2000
Issue: 3775 / Categories:
In the early hours of Tuesday 5 September, the Revenue's Newcastle stamp office building, Cale Cross House, was seriously damaged by a fire on the second floor. Although there is some serious smoke damage, the flames did not reach the office, and no documents have been destroyed.
The premises are, however, not fit for occupation on any floor for the time being, and it is expected to be at least three months before the premises are habitable again. As a consequence of this, Newcastle Stamp Office has had to be relocated to temporary premises in Washington, Tyne & Wear.
The Revenue says that it is able to stamp documents at the Washington site, and has arranged for all mail which is sent to the usual DX box number, DX 61021 Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to be redirected to the temporary premises in Washington.
The address of the temporary premises is: The Stamp Office, 4th Floor, Weardale House, Washington, Tyne & Wear, NE37 1LW, tel: 0191 201 7413; fax: 0191 201 7392.
Unfortunately, there is no counter service for the immediate stamping of documents for Newcastle-based customers, but the Revenue is exploring the possibility of providing an alternative counter service.
Any queries about these temporary arrangements should be directed to Tony Stoker, assistant director at the Newcastle Stamp Office on 0191 201 7393.
