Company cars
Responding to a question concerning the taxation of company cars, Dawn Primarolo said that basing the charge on the car's list price at first registration ensured that employees driving identical cars of the same age paid the same amount of tax, and this was why this was not changing when the company car tax system was reformed in April 2002. She added that because many car manufacturers were reducing the prices of cars, many company car drivers would pay less tax as their cars were replaced.

Widowers bereavement
Dawn Primarolo said that no meetings had taken place between TaxAid and Treasury ministers regarding the implications of the out-of-court settlement with Christopher Crossland, but that TaxAid had had a meeting with Revenue officials. She added that the settlement had no implications for other recently widowed men.

Tax investigations
Responding to a question relating to self assessment investigations, Dawn Primarolo reminded Parliament that the Government intended to bring forward changes to the law in the next Finance Bill and that the Revenue intended to improve procedures for conducting enquiries after consulting interested parties.
In reply to another question asking why the Revenue has the right to enquire into any tax return without giving reasons, Ms Primarolo said that providing information as to why a return was under enquiry would 'reduce the effectiveness of the selection method'.
