Stamp duty
The Chancellor was asked what representations he had received about the number of house buyers who have unnecessarily paid stamp duty because of inaccurate information provided by the Revenue relating to post codes. John Healey replied that it was the taxpayer's responsibility to claim the relief. The Revenue has made available a postcode search facility on its website, but was aware that there have been some problems with it. However, it dealt with these as they arose, and taxpayers who have wrongly paid stamp duty may claim a full repayment with interest from the Revenue. The Revenue is dealing with approximately 300 such claims a month.
