In each of the years ending March 2004 and 2005, HMRC received £99 million from penalties for late payment of VAT. For the years ending October 2003 and 2004, HMRC received £406.49 million and £400.77 million respectively from interest paid for late payment of direct taxes. In the same two years, HMRC received £66.8 million and £62.49 million from penalties for late payment of direct taxes.
