A tale of two sisters
Alice and Mary were sisters. By a curious coincidence they shared the same birthday: Alice was born on 1 June 1979 just two years before Mary. They were very bright girls. They had gone to the same Oxford college where both got first class degrees in PPE. They had, in turn, got very good jobs in the Civil Service and hoped one day to become Permanent Secretaries. To their parents' dismay, they were enthusiastic supporters of New Labour.
