The Chancellor was asked about the number of inquiries into 2004-05 tax returns that have been started in each month. Dawn Primarolo said that HMRC did not keep a record of inquiries taken up by tax return year. She said that most inquiries into 2004-05 returns would have started during the 2005-06 tax year and gave the following figures for inquiries into returns from self-employed traders and individuals:

HMRC explain the peak of enquiries taken up in January as happening because 'the enquiry window ends on 31 January so we need to ensure that all enquiries have been started by that date.
With regard to the fall in take ups in the February and March, HMRC say that this 'reflects the fact that these will largely be on the following year's returns where the filing period is still open so there will be a smaller pool of returns for selection'.
