Incorrect penalty notices
A recent case in this office seems to indicate that HMRC will now levy a penalty even if you send your tax return in on time!
We submitted a tax return for a client by hand to HMRC's Leicester office on 31 January 2007. Receipts for returns are no longer provided. Our client has now received a £100 penalty for the late submission of his tax return. We immediately checked our client's records using HMRC's online service. This states that:

'We received your tax return on 31 January 2007.
You have a total of £100 i.e. the penalty becoming due
for payment.'
Is this a new tactic by HMRC to increase their revenue take or just another 'computer error?'
