I wonder if readers could give me some advice in my new circumstances. I have recently ceased employment, but have taken on a consultancy role working for the same firm. Previously I was employed in a technical/managerial role, but my new work will relate solely to technical issues — someone else can take care of the headaches that are associated with human resources, logistical and implementation issues! I will work on technical issues as and when they arise.

Currently, I am working a five-day week for my previous employer, but eventually I am hoping to reduce this to about two days per week to allow me more free time as well as the option to look for work from other sources. I have an office at my disposal at the client's premises, but have the ability to do some work from home. Naturally, I would like to be able to treat my home as my office and claim some associated costs for that as well as for the costs of approximately 100 miles per day travelling by car between my home and the client's (and hopefully future clients') premises.
Can readers give me any advice regarding the level of work that I would need to be undertaking from home for this to be validly treated as my office?
