Jack Taxable, part of the Taxable family, now has a group on Facebook. The group is open to all to join who have profiles on the social networking site.
It has been set up so that people with an interest in tax can network and exchange information via the discussion board and profile 'wall'.
Rob Ellerby, president of The Chartered Institute of Taxation, explained: 'Websites like Facebook allow us to communicate with our stakeholders in new ways. This is why we have established a presence in what is popularly described as Web 2.0'.
The CIOT hopes that The Jack Taxable Group will be of particular use to those thinking of becoming chartered tax advisers and to students.
Facebook felt that it was inappropriate to allow a cartoon character to have a profile. Jack Taxable is sorry that he 'temporarily lost touch with everyone who had linked to me' when his profile was taken down, but hopes people 'will join my group and we can stay in touch that way'.
