Mervyn King re-appointed as governor for next five years

Mervyn King has been re-appointed as governor of the Bank of England. He will serve for a period of five years, following the expiration on 30 June 2008 of his present term.

Mr King was first appointed in July 2003. He was previously deputy governor from 1998 to 2003, and chief economist and executive director from 1991.

Welcoming the re-appointment, the Chancellor said that Mr King 'has played a key role in delivering macroeconomic stability in the UK, and his leadership and experience will continue to prove invaluable to the Bank of England'.
