Users can sign up for instant updates

The CIOT has once again enhanced its online offering, with the unveiling of a profile on Twitter.

Users of the free social networking service can now sign up to receive the latest CIOT press releases, submissions to government and other relevant information about the organisation.

Twitter can be viewed on PCs and mobile phone. It allows users to send text-based updates — known as 'tweets' — to their own profiles via mobile, instant messaging, or third-party applications such as Facebook.

The updates are then instantly forwarded to all registered recipients, who can choose to receive the messages on various media, including the Twitter site, text message, RSS and email.

The launch of CIOT News on Twitter is the latest digital communication channel to be enhanced or set up by the organisation.

The CIOT website was revamped late last year, and the institute has a presence on popular social utility Facebook.

In October 2007, the CIOT became the first tax body to give a lecture in virtual online world Second Life.

President Rob Ellerby said the CIOT 'believes that it is important for people to be able to access information about [us]  in whichever way they choose.

'We have always striven to be open and accessible, and CIOT News is part of this.'
