I have read with interest the letters from David Alcock and Brian Hancock in Taxation 26 June 2008.

With regard to Brian's letter I can only say this is the tip of the iceberg. To review the HMRC's service issues on a regular basis reveals nothing short of a comedy of errors.

It took five weeks to resolve a 'repayment to nominee' issue preventing such returns being filed and currently (26 June) error messages are appearing when attempting to file on line again preventing on line filing.

I hope Brian is also aware the HMRC software does not allow losses to carry forward to exceed zero cannot recognise a reduced payment on account of zero and is unaware of the 80% rule for payments on account (as well as indicating these to be for 2007-08 rather than 2008-09).
