Protecting the term accountant

I note with interest the Update item suggesting that some in the industry wish to protect the term accountant tax adviser or consultant.

Can you inform me how many of your readers are unqualified? Does the number exceed the 4 134 who voted in the online poll?

I am a ‘time-barred chartered accountant’ having passed PE1 but after being referred at PE2 failed the retakes.

I therefore have no qualifications and do not imply that I am qualified in any way. I do however undertake extensive CPD and as you can see also subscribe to Taxation.

Although I understand the desire to protect hard earned qualifications I believe that the current requirement to register with HMRC authorities [Editorial note: tax advisers must register with HMRC for money laundering purposes if they are not a member of qualifying professional body] will ultimately...
