Grant Thornton partner is preferred candidate

Inhabitants of the capital may soon see a season tax professional take up the role of Lord Mayor of London.

Veteran tax adviser Ian Luder is the City of London Corporation's preferred candidate among those standing in the 29 September election to find a successor to incumbent David Lewis.

Alderman Luder is currently a sheriff of the City of London, his principal duty being supporting the Lord Mayor on many visits and official functions, both at home and overseas.

He combines this role for the City of London with his day job of tax partner at Grant Thornton, where he specialises in the tax affairs of professional partnerships and their partners, professional institutions and charities.

He was previously a partner at Arthur Andersen, heading the company's private client practice for more than a decade.

Ian served on the council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation from 1983 to 1997, and was president in 2004-2005. He is also a founder member and past master of the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers, and is a former chairman of the trustees of the TaxAid charity.

Should he be successful in his attempt to become Lord Mayor, his main responsibility will be to represent, support and promote the businesses and people of the City of London.
