Including HR veteran and former permanent secretary

Four new non-executive appointments have been made to the HMRC board:

  • Colin Cobain, ex-chief information officer for Tesco and current interim group CIO at the brewer SABMiller.
  • Human resources veteran Philippa Hird, who until recently was the group HR director of ITV.
  • Phil Hodkinson, an external adviser to the Revenue's senior management team and audit committee.
  • Dame Sue Street, a strategic advisor to Deloitte LLP, and a former permanent secretary for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport

The appointments are for a period of three years and were made following an external recruitment process that was carried out in accordance with Cabinet Office guidance.

The HMRC board – which also includes on-going non-execs John Spence and Mark Haysom – provides strategic leadership, approves business plans, monitors performance and works to ensure decent standards of corporate governance.

The Revenue's chairman, Mike Clasper, said: ‘This is the next step in strengthening the department's governance.

'The non-executives bring to the board a diverse mix of expertise and skills from across both public and private sector.'
