At the risk of irritating those of you who have been slaving over a pile of tax returns with only an hour or two off to grab a quick slice of turkey and Christmas pudding I should explain that the publishing schedule of Taxation means that we get the opportunity for two weeks off over Christmas.

That also means that most of this issue had to be prepared before Christmas as we go to press each week on a Monday.
