'HMRC will be contacting tax agents who file paper tax returns'

Dear agent colleague

31 October self assessment deadline – encouraging online filing

On 31 January 2010 HMRC passed a significant milestone with nearly 6.5 million (75%) of self assessment tax returns filed online.

Tax agents and advisers made a considerable contribution to this total and the self assessment online service was stable and responded well to the demands of the filing peak.

We would like to encourage more people to use the online facility.

Benefits of the service include:

  • an instant acknowledgment as soon as HMRC receives your tax return;
  • tax worked out automatically as you complete the form so you know what you owe or are owed right away;
  • online tax returns are processed faster than paper returns and any money you are owed by HMRC is repaid to you more...
