Tax code changes

HMRC have published a questions and answers document in connection with the recent technical note on the draft amendments to PAYE regulations relating to a tax code change for share-based payments made after the employee leaves employment.

Online only

Paper VAT returns will become obsolete from April 2012, when all 1.9 million VAT-registered businesses in the UK will have to submit their VAT returns online, and pay electronically, for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 April 2012.

No tax

Athletes resident outside the UK who compete at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be exempt from income tax, the Treasury announced recently. This exemption will include any appearance fees, plus the proportion of worldwide endorsement income related to the Glasgow 2014 appearance.

GAAR

The Chartered Institute of Taxation and the Association of Taxation Technicians has published their response to the proposed general anti-avoidance rule. One of the bodies' key concerns is the fact the rule will not solve the high-profile problems identified in the tax system.
