HMRC to form electronic data link with DWP

The government has introduced measures aimed at easing pensioners’ dealings with the the taxman. The admin upgrade follows the publication in March of the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS) interim review of the taxation of pensioners.

Changes include the introduction of an electronic data link between HMRC and the Department for Work and Pensions, to provide more accurate information. It will also allow the Revenue to update its records more quickly so that a greater number of pensioners are taxed correctly on state pensions.

Work is planned for the improvement of the process for when a pensioner suffers a bereavement, and administrative forms for married couple’s allowance are to be simplified in reaction to suggestions from the OTS.

The organisation’s tax director, John Whiting, said he was encouraged “to see HMRC are taking steps to improve things for pensioners as a direct result of our work”.
