  • The domestic reverse charge on wholesale buying and selling of UK telecommunications services takes effect from 1 February. Do you have any clients who might be affected? Make sure they are aware of their obligations – whether they are sellers or buyers.


  • The decision in Narroya (TC4699) is a useful reminder that even if a trader buys a car for general business use input tax cannot be claimed if it is available for private use – see also HMRC’s VAT Input Tax Manual at VIT52100.


  • When capital gains tax arrived in 1965 the Inland Revenue claimed that estate duty valuation rules would apply but they never have. Recent case law suggests that maybe they should. Perhaps it is time for valuers to reconsider their approach in capital gains tax cases.
