Different world.

A couple of weeks ago I was looking in the 1976 volume of Taxation for something I am writing for the Tolley centenary but was distracted by an article about that year’s Taxation Magazine conference in Bournemouth. What was astonishing was the added attraction of ‘an attractive programme arranged for the lady guests’. A flavour of the event can be seen from the items on the programme:

  • Civic welcome by the mayor – ‘it is hoped that lady visitors will attend’.
  • Civic reception ‘to which all members and their ladies will be invited’.
  • Saturday morning: Mock commissioners’ appeal. ‘For the ladies a morning visit to Compton Acres at Poole. Coffee and biscuits will be served.’
  • Sunday morning: Morning service for members ‘and their ladies’.
  • Monday morning: Capital transfer tax planning. ‘For the...
