MPs raise concerns over department’s transformation agenda.

MPs have questioned whether HMRC can cope with the joint challenges of its massive transformation agenda and the demands imposed by developments such as Brexit.

The House of Commons’ Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report into the Revenue’s performance highlights the workload the department is facing in particular that involved in its 15 transformation programmes forming the largest such project in Europe (see here).

Together with the Treasury HMRC has to decide how it allocates limited resources to its operations to increase tax revenues protect performance levels prioritise its transformation and estate programmes and invest in measures to tackle tax evasion fraud and error.

The committee was concerned about the impact on the ordinary taxpayer from the growing challenges facing HMRC and whether it is doing enough to support vulnerable people claiming tax credits especially as they transfer to universal credit.
