Expenditure on R&D surges in 2022

Expenditure on research and development (R&D) performed by UK businesses was £49.9bn in 2022 an increase of £3bn since 2021 (6.4%) according to the data for 2022 from the Office for National Statistics’ annual business enterprise research and development (BERD) survey. This is the first period produced based on the new sample design and results methodology.

The pharmaceuticals product group made the largest contribution to the total of business R&D performed in 2022 with £9bn - 17.9% of total R&D performed by UK businesses.

The east of England had the largest regional value of business R&D at £10.7bn (21.4%).

The total value of R&D performed by the arts entertainment and recreation industries was £0.9bn.
