HMRC will be ready to launch its coronavirus job retention scheme portal on 20 April. At a virtual hearing of the House of Commons’ Treasury Committee, Jim Harra, HMRC first permanent secretary and chief executive, said the service will be self-serve with guidance for employers on how to compile claims ready for upload.

Mr Harra told MPs that HMRC had been working ‘flat out’ since the scheme was announced. The new portal opened for testing with a small number of employers on 8 April. It will then be opened on 20 April for employers to make their claims and there will be time for HMRC to make payments before 30 April.

At the same meeting, Mr Harra said the department would be prioritising staff to help employers with their claims. He said the department was also working with the professional bodies, such as the ICAEW and CIOT, to make sure their members were available to help their clients.
