HMRC sends 14,000 letters to taxpayers who sold property in 2018-19

HMRC is sending 14 000 letters to people who have sold a residential property during 2018-19 asking them to check whether they owe capital gains tax.

An HMRC spokesperson said: ‘We are writing to customers [sic] who we believe have sold a property which may have given rise to a capital gains tax charge but who did not tell us that they had any tax to pay.

‘We know that many customers are not aware of their capital gains tax obligations. We want to ensure any customers who may have a CGT liability in respect of a property disposal are given the opportunity to review their tax affairs and bring them up to date.’

Blick Rothenberg partner Suzanne Briggs said: ‘The ‘nudge’ letter relating to the 2018-19 tax year will invite taxpayers to review their capital gains tax position and either amend their tax return or make a disclosure.’
