Self assessment

Since April 2021 more than 142 000 taxpayers used HMRC’s online time-to-pay facility to pay tax worth almost £475m in instalments. Self-assessment taxpayers who did not pay their outstanding tax by 1 April will be liable to a 5% penalty.

Making tax digital

HMRC has updated its guidance to reflect that VAT-registered businesses with taxable turnover below the registration threshold need to follow the making tax digital rules from 1 April 2022.

Tourism and hospitality

HMRC has updated its guidance to reflect that the temporary reduced rate of VAT for tourism and hospitality ended on 31 March. From 1 April the normal VAT rules apply and VAT should be charged at the standard rate.
